We got in the car this morning and started driving, and low and behold we ended up out on Cape Cod. We started at the visitor center for the National Seashore. They have a pretty cool little museum and the Rangers there were great.
Then after grabbing a bite to eat at Arnold's (highly recommended by the way) we decided to go all the way to the tip of the cape, which is Provincetown, and climb the Pilgrim Tower. It was a hard climb, but the views were worth it. The only downside is that the view from the top is covered in plexiglass and people have put their hands (and god knows what else) all over it, making it difficult to get good pictures.
Then we swung by a lighthouse (because that's what we do) and checked that out. It was pretty small, but the interesting thing was that they had to move it about 100 yes back because the cliff it's on is eroding away at a staggering rate.
Last stop before heading home was the Marconi Area. There are 2 cool things there. First, the site where Marconi sent the first trans-Atlantic telegraph communication. The site (although pretty) was a bit disappointing since it's just a rock now, but I did learn something that I had never really thought about. The invention of the telegraph by Marconi is the only reason there were any survivors at all from the Titanic. Otherwise no one would have known they were missing until the boat didn't show up...timing is everything!
The second part was Marconi Beach, which was very pretty. You have to climb down 3 flights of stairs to get from the top of the cliff down to the water. Once there it's a short walk accross nice clean sand to the water. This is definately not the warm southern ocean water though...Stephanie didn't even really try to get wet...it was super cold! While we were down there at the water's edge, I glanced up and saw something looking right at me...a Seal! They were playing just off shore and just popping up every once and a while to excite the crowd... I was able to grab a pic from my phone...
After the beach we loaded up and drove home. It was a long hard day, but quite the experience.
Wonderful to see everything that you have seen! We really wanted to make it to P'town, but couldn't make it happen with the time that we had available. I'm looking forward to experiencing it the next time we visit. Thanks for sharing your view!!
